🌴 Gammalu (Pterocarpus Marsupium) is a valuable medicinal plant. It grows to a height of 70-80 feet and is large. According to Osuthuru Visithuru, four species are considered Gammalu. The plant that is widespread today as Gammalu was brought from South India and spread by the British, says Kiriella Gnanavimala Thero. It has been planted for reforestation and shade. A 30-acre Gammalu forest area, which was planted as a reforestation, is located near Harangala village, near Nawalapitiya. It was planted around 1940. 

 ✍️ When the Gammalu (Pterocarpus marsupium) tree is incised, a reddish exudate (often called latex, kino, or gum‑resin) oozes out; this is collected, bottled, and sold. Traditionally, villagers used to drink water mixed with a few drops of this exudate. Though bitter, this “milk” or “kino” is considered very beneficial. The timber of Gammalu is strong and durable. Medicinally, the bark, wood (especially heartwood), and resin are used: in folk and Ayurvedic medicine, they are taken for diabetes, hemorrhoids, poor digestion, and to prevent vomiting, among other uses. Scientific studies have confirmed that the heartwood and bark have antidiabetic, antioxidative, and hypoglycaemic effects; some compounds in them may help regenerate pancreatic beta‑cells, improve glucose uptake, and lower blood sugar levels.

✍️ A traditional remedy uses bark‑soaked cold water from Pterocarpus marsupium (Gammalu), drunk first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, believed to help control diabetes; modern studies in animals support this, showing its extracts reduce blood glucose, lower HbA₁c, improve insulin levels, and lessen inflammation. The plant is also used for skin conditions like eczema, where leaf pastes are applied topically for relief.
